On December 10 and 11 Tilburg will again be home to the Incubate festival. It brings more than 60 artists in an intimate context to an international audience. Incubate is known for its diverse line-up, ranging from music, arts, film and this time around even a comic fair! With over 10 venues, Incubate might awe you in its scope. That's why we set up this handy survival guide to make sure you will get the most out of your visit.
We have also made a page with answers to your most prominent questions. Check out this practical information and feel free to contact us via social media if you have any unanswered questions.
Ranging from black metal to free-jazz and back to electronic music, Incubate has a lot to offer in terms of music. We divided our line-up in various genres to give you a quick overview on what we have to offer. You can check out all of the performing artists and projects on our line-up page.
On Saturday 10th of December Olaf Holzapfel will do a special performance with a group of participants and craftsmen, around the noble art of rope making. Making a rope from straw is a complex process, a traditional craft that few still master. Tilburg is known for its history in textiles and the use of flax and hemp, as traditionally hemp was grown for processing into rope. As Incubate always connects artists with visitors and history with contemporary art, we invite all those interested to join us and Holzapfel in this special performance.
THE BUNKER (DER BUNKER)
On the closing day of our December edition Incubate presents a cinematic special around the work of German director Nikias Chryssos. We will show Chryssos’s directorial debut movie Der Bunker (2015), an intriguing horror-comedy that received praise and a number of awards from ao the French Mauvais Genre Film Festival and Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival. Der Bunker centers around an eccentric family suffering from delusions of grandeur with regard to their son Klaus, and a student temporarily living with them to finish his thesis.
Chryssos himself will be present to participate in a Q&A with the audience after the screening.
THE GRANDFATHER (DER GROSSVATER)
This surrealistic short film that was made before ‘Der Bunker’ is about life and death and defines director Chrysoss’ tone of directing. The story is about a boy visiting his dying grandfather Werner, an avid collector of everything that once walked, crawled, swam or flew but is now dead hanging on the wall. The old man insists that they drink a psychedelic Indian potion together, have a tussle, discuss women and retrieve memories. They communicate as strangers and as the two generations are miles apart, the mansion serves as a symbolic farewell.
The Grandfather is full of witty details and made up of images that you would normally only encounter in nightmares.
Together with Tilburg natives, comic creators and founders of the small press magazine ‘Wobby’, Incubate is proud to add a Comic Fair to its December edition. This will be accompanied by an English edition of the Wobby magazine, with contributions from international comic makers. There will also be talks, performances and interviews, but the main event will be your chance to meet and see some of your favorite comic book creators.
