"Barcodes" is a 16mm film based on manipulating a barcode to play scales of tones. The barcode has been copied to a transparent sticker and then glued on to the film all the way to the soundtrack of the film. The barcode then makes sound as it passes the photoelectric cell in the film projector. This shows a direct connection between the sound and the image. What you see is what you hear. 



By having glued on a barcode in different sizes, the barcode plays over a range of two octaves (from low to high C). The film was originally used in an installation entitled "Composition for a film projector, barcode and a spotlight".



Cecilie Bjørgås Jordheim is a visual artist currently working with concepts of optical sound on film, formalism vs. narrativity and Musique concréte. Jordheim shows her projects in installations where she finds interest in who sound and light is experienced in space. She has her education from Bergen National Academy of the Arts (Bergen, Norway), Willem de Kooning Academie (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and Oslo National Academy of the Arts (Oslo, Norway). She is currently based in Oslo.
