Dery writes about media, the visual landscape, fringe trends, and unpopular culture. He kick-started the interest in black technoculture (through his essay "Black to the Future," in which he coined the term "Afrofuturism"). In a keynote speech Dery will examine the science-fictional (i.e., AfroFuturist) and techno-bricoleur aspects of the work of Sun Ra, setting them within the context of African-American culture's relationship to technoculture and sci-fi mythology.
