– a selection of posters from Vera -

There’s something very special about Vera. It’s not the biggest club in Holland, it’s not the most beautiful club in Holland, but it’s legendary status is unsurpassed. Part of that status has to do with the fact that, next to a lot of cool shows, they have a great club of graphic designers, a great periodical called Vera Krant and their own silkscreen studio. Four of those people are featured in this special exhibition at Tilburg’s Duvelhok. Making posters for bands with cool names is only part of their output, but we decided to focus on this part to make a direct link to ZXZW.

Paul van der Werf, for instance, also does illustrations for big companies like Interpolis, Heineken, Fortis Bank and the Dutch railroads. Next to that he makes colorful, almost collage styled posters for Vera. Check out his portfolio at www.shootmedia.nl and scroll down for gorgeous posters of Wolf Eyes, Iron Long and Red Sparowes. The combination of abstract lettering and recognizable elements in the collage gives his artwork an almost surreal feel.

Willem Kolvoort takes a completely different approach with his outlined comic style illustrations and posters. His posters could have very also been part of a children’s book or an adult comics like Fritz the Cat or Mr Natural. Several cool posters for Daniel Johnson, Dinosaur Jr (the one with the lonely dragon – classic stuff!), Yo La Tengo and The Thermals show his gloriously happy style. Check his work at www.willemkolvoort.nl

Lots of Rock ‘n Roll oriented images dominate the posters of Wytse Sterk. The traditional skulls, bones and guitars are stylized in classy posters for bands like Krisiun, The Kills and White Cowbell Oklahoma. Taking elements from different subcultures works extremely well in his specially shaped designs. Check his stuff out at www.gosterk.nl

Last but certainly not least there’s Mara Piccione. She’s also involved in our Poster Rock project and delivered a truly great poster for Cutting Pink with Knives. Her style is a world in itself, inhabited by strange creatures of a subhuman disposition. Some of the critters look more like mutated dogs though. Beautiful color use and strong compositions make her posters luscious and original. She also designed stuff for our northern brothers Eurosonic by the way. Check out her vision and style at: www.piccione.nl

These four poster designers and artists from the city of Groningen show us that there is still groundbreaking and breathtaking work being done in the field of poster and pop design. Come see a collection of the work they’ve made for Vera and get a taste of it.
